Overthinking, anxiety, and sleepless nights often peak during times of change. When we face uncertainty in life or career, the mind races to protect us. In this week’s episode of Unbox The Podcast, Intuitive Life Mentor and holistic therapist Sahar Palmer explores why the brain refuses to switch off and how to quiet it before exhaustion takes hold.
When life transitions trigger mental noise
During major transitions—changing roles, leaving a relationship, or redefining success—the mind tries to restore control. Professionals and leaders are particularly prone to this because logic has served them well in decision-making. But logic alone cannot process emotional uncertainty. That’s when overthinking begins.
Sahar explains that what we call “thinking” is often a loop of fear disguised as reason. The more we replay an outcome, the louder the mind becomes. The result is anxiety, fatigue, and restless nights.
Finding the root-cause: the holistic view
At Unbox with Sahar, the approach is always holistic. You cannot focus on a solution until you identify the root-cause. And the cure must be just as holistic, linking all aspects of being human—body, emotions, mind, and accountability.
You cannot separate the body from your experiences or the emotions those experiences create. It is repeated emotions that form beliefs, and beliefs dictate actions. Everything you think, feel, and do is interconnected.
When this awareness deepens, you begin to see that your real self is constant; only your roles shift.
The brain: an amplifier of thought
Physicist David Bohm described the brain as a device for amplifying thought. If you feed it fear, it multiplies fear. If you feed it calm, it expands calm. Overthinking is the brain’s way of seeking safety through repetition, but it drains the body’s energy and leaves you feeling tense and restless.
Sahar shares that unspent mental energy has to go somewhere—it often shows up as nightmares or panic attacks. The solution begins with movement and breath.
A short practice to reset your mind
Go outside if you can. Move your body. Let nature remind your brain what truly matters.
If weather or time doesn’t allow, try gentle Qi Gong movements or simple stretches indoors.
Then breathe.
Take a slow, deep breath in through your nose.
Hold it briefly.
Exhale through your mouth while grinning—this helps you release tension and slows the exhale naturally.
Your breath tells your brain exactly how you are doing. Three slow breaths can shift your internal chemistry and calm the racing thoughts.
When logic fails
Sometimes overthinking happens because we simply lack enough information. The brain groups data into patterns—a process called chunking. When a piece of information is missing, the mind loops. The way forward is to seek knowledge: ask for help, take a course, gather facts. Give your brain what it needs to move from worry to action.

Accountability and real change
Avoidance is another reason people stay trapped in overthinking. Without accountability, the cycle continues. Sahar reminds us: If you don’t take charge, no one else will. If you don’t live your life, no one can live it for you.
