Meditation has been part of my work for many years, but not in the way most people imagine.

Years ago, I taught meditation in Dubai through weekly group sessions. People came for different reasons. Some wanted to relax after work, others hoped to quieten a busy mind, reduce stress or sleep better. Those benefits certainly happened, but over time I realised they were not the most important part of the experience.

What fascinated me was what happened afterwards.

As people developed a regular meditation practice, they became more self-aware. They remembered their dreams more clearly, recognised emotional patterns; and responded differently to life’s challenges. They were not escaping reality. They were becoming more present within it.

That experience completely changed my understanding of meditation.

Meditation Is About Awareness

People often think meditation is about emptying the mind or stopping thoughts.

That has never been my experience.

For me, meditation creates the space to observe yourself more clearly.

It allows the noise of daily life to settle enough for you to recognise what your body is communicating, what your emotions are trying to tell you, how your thinking influences your choices and whether your actions are aligned with the life you truly want to create.

Looking back, I can see that those years quietly shaped what later became Unbox The Real You and the Four Dimensions of Change: Body, Emotions, Mind and Accountability to Action (BEMA).

Meditation became one of many practical ways of developing self-awareness, rather than the goal itself.

The Power of Sound and the Human Voice

Perhaps the greatest lesson I learnt was not about meditation, but the power of voice and sound.

Sitting with hundreds of people over the years made me realise that the human voice carries much more than information. It carries intention, calmness and presence. The way words are spoken can influence how we feel, how deeply we relax and how receptive we become to new awareness.

It is one of the reasons I continue to record guided meditations today. It is also why I am currently recording the audiobook of my first Arabic poetry collection, Untha Al Sahar (أنثى السحر). Poetry is not only read. It is experienced through rhythm, silence, emotion and the vibration of the spoken word.

Why I Create Personalised Guided Meditations

Today, I no longer teach regular meditation classes. Instead, I create guided meditations that people can use whenever they need them, wherever they are in the world.

Some recordings focus on relaxation, grounding or sleep. Others support dream work, intuition and self-awareness. Others are included in my e-books via scannable QR codes.

Increasingly, I also create personalised guided meditations for individuals. These are written and recorded specifically around a person’s circumstances, goals or challenges because no two people experience life in the same way. A meditation created for one person may not be the right one for another.

It is a much more personal approach and one that reflects how my work has evolved over the years.

A Continuing Evolution

When I look back now, I realise those early meditation groups were not simply teaching people how to meditate. They were teaching me.

Life mentor Sahar Huneidi Palmer in yoga pose against serene background on the cover of her Connecting with your spirit guides meditation. They helped me understand how awareness changes us. They showed me that sound has the ability to influence how we experience ourselves. Most importantly, they confirmed something that has become central to all my work today: lasting change does not happen because someone gives us answers. It happens because we become aware enough to discover our own.

Consciousness can only change with the application of consciousness.
