Do you ever feel guilty for wanting to change your life?

Many of my clients tell me, “I don’t want to let others down,” or “I feel bad for leaving, even though I know it’s right for me.” In today’s episode of Unbox The Podcast, I’m talking about starting a new chapter without guilt. Because guilt is one of the biggest blockers to living the life you want. It keeps you stuck in old stories, old roles, and old identities that no longer fit.

When guilt is real

Sometimes guilt is real – felt as heaviness in your chest or tightness in your throat. Other times, it’s acquired guilt, like downloading a virus you didn’t know was there. You think you’re guilty because you were conditioned to be, to keep yourself small and quiet.

I shared how guilt often masks self-abandonment. We think we’re being kind by holding back, but really, we’re leaving ourselves behind.

Analysis is paralysis

I also spoke about a common pattern: analysis is paralysis. Overthinking every step, every possibility, wondering what others will say – none of that moves you forward. Only action does. Life is interactive. When you take a step, life responds, and you gain clarity to pivot, refine, and build from wherever you are.

Another thing I hear is, “I tried this, but people didn’t change.” Change isn’t always about others. Sometimes it’s your delivery, timing, or the words you choose. And sometimes, it’s about standing so rooted in your truth that others eventually feel it; or you both choose to part ways peacefully.

You’re not a victim

Complaining without action only asserts your victimhood and keeps you stuck. Accountability sounds like possibility; self-reproach sounds like punishment.

One of my clients felt she had missed her destiny because she didn’t leave her job sooner. But within weeks of stepping away, her creativity returned, and new opportunities opened up. She realised she hadn’t missed her destiny – it was waiting for her to show up fully.

Questions to ask yourself

  • Where are you holding back because of guilt?
  • Is it really about letting others down, or are you abandoning yourself?
  • What is the smallest action you can take today to start building your new chapter?

Remember, your destiny isn’t something you miss. It’s the unfolding of your real self, moment by moment, as you choose your truth.
