Take it from a life mentor: Real growth begins the moment you stop trying so hard

There comes a point in life where effort alone just isn’t enough. You’ve read the books, pushed through the fear, done everything “right”—and yet, something still feels off. That’s often when clients reach out. Not because they’re beaten, but because they’re ready to stop spinning and start listening to what their life is really asking of them. They hit a wall or                                                                                                                                                                                                       feel off track.

Surrender isn’t giving up—it’s giving way

Most people confuse surrender with weakness, when in fact it’s the most intelligent pivot you can make. It’s about knowing when to stop pushing against the tide. Instead, allow the current of life to show you a better, wiser way forward. Life isn’t linear. You’re not meant to grind every day; you’re here to grow, shift, and realign.

Moreover, as a life mentor i can tell that the issue is that we’re taught to force results. To hustle, push, and never stop. But that only works for so long. Eventually, burnout shows up. Or the results stop coming. However, when you surrender the need to control everything, space opens up. Life moves again. You don’t have to give up. Just stop paddling so hard and let the current help you.

Your fifties aren’t a crisis—they’re a calling

If you’re in your fifties, you’ve likely noticed a quiet but powerful shift. The need for approval begins to fade, and the desire to live more truthfully takes over. Hormonal changes open the door to deeper insight, and the ego starts to loosen its grip. This is not a decline—it’s an awakening to who you really are. You’ve earned the right to redefine yourself!

Small shifts carry great power

Most expect immediate resolution- like taking a pill and poof! They’re back to normal. But transformation isn’t one big leap. It’s a series of tiny shifts. Change doesn’t require a dramatic overhaul. In fact, radical steps can scare your nervous system into resistance. In my Unbox Life Mentoring, we call this modulating—adjusting your mindset, emotions, or habits in real time.

The key is to modulate—make subtle but steady shifts. Swap one daily habit, change how you speak to yourself, take a different route to work. These small, conscious adjustments signal your mind that it’s safe to evolve. Small steps create sustainable change.

I’ve developed a set of cards for self-guidance to accompany Becoming You book (to be published by Arcturus), with you in mind; so you can help yourself. I t will be coming out net year- stay tuned! I can’t wait for you to get your hands on it, then you can be your own mentor.

Your inner compass is wiser than you think

When you surrender, the noise dies down, your heart speaks clearly. It doesn’t scream—it whispers. The real wisdom often doesn’t come from overthinking but from the quiet knowing that lives in your body. If your head and heart agree, pay attention. That’s alignment—and it’s worth following.

Creative acts unlock stuck energy

From I experience as a life mentor, i can honestly tell that Journaling, painting, gardening, or simply rearranging your space can help bypass mental chatter and give shape to unspoken emotions. Your creativity isn’t about performance—it’s a healing tool. It reconnects you with your inner world and often offers answers your thinking mind can’t reach.

Energy needs regular clearing—just like your home

Your personal energy field collects noise and debris just like a cluttered room. Meditation, grounding exercises, saying no without guilt, and spending time in silence can help you reset. Emotional suppression creates stagnation, and over time, it may even show up in your body. Clearing your field is not indulgence—it’s maintenance. You will find plenty of tips on clearing your energy in my Chakra Healing book. Use whatever you’re drawn to.

Becoming you is not a destination—it’s a rhythm

You don’t arrive at the Real You once and for all. You grow into it, layer by layer, as life nudges you through shifts. Using the Four Dimensions of Change—Body, Emotions, Mind & Beliefs, and Accountability to Action—helps you notice where you’re off balance and return to clarity. I hope you’ve subscribed to Unbox The Podcast, because that is all we talk about this year! You will find some answers there whenever you need them.

Start here: daily shifts to support your growth

  • Sit in silence for 5–10 minutes
  • Journal your thoughts without editing
  • Move your body mindfully
  • Drink water with intention
  • Try one creative thing a week
  • Choose one small ‘yes’ that lights you up
  • Set a boundary with love, not guilt

You haven’t missed your path—you’ve just paused

Even if you’ve felt off track for years, your next step is always just one conscious choice away. As your life mentor, I am asserting that there’s nothing wrong with you. You are becoming, and that’s a powerful place to be.
